What is an Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS), named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system in our bodies. It is involved in establishing and maintaining animal health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks but the goal is always the same: homeostasis. That is the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. The ECS is involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, nausea, mood, memory, and inflammation to name but a few. Each creature on the planet that has a vertebrate, has an Endocannabinoid System, including your pet. Each ECS makes its own cannabinoids, but also needs help from an outside source. Just as you add essential fatty acids to a pets diet, it is also beneficial to add additional cannabinoids. One way to do this is through hemp.

What is Hemp?

Hemp has been a staple crop for over 10,000 years offering shelter, clothing, paper, and food. It has also been protecting those who consume it from many ailments. Feeding hemp to animals helped to ensure they could enjoy a healthy well balanced diet, especially for those in lean times who suffered financially and could not always provide a sufficient diet. Hemp is a cousin of the cannabis plant and many believe them to be one and the same, so much so that when marijuana became illegal, hemp was also deemed a narcotic. As laws changed hemp was again being harvested and many now appreciate the value of adding it to their own, and their pet's, daily diet. You can buy hemp from your local grocer in a variety of ways: powders, seeds, oil, and protein. Apawthecary Pets is proud to be among the first to offer a healthy alternative supplement made with non-GMO human grade ingredients you can pronounce.

The oral drops can be beneficial to any animal with a spinal column as explained above. While the majority of our patients are canines, felines, and equines, we have helped other domesticated animals and reptiles.

What is MCT Oil?

(Medium Chain Triglyceride coconut oil) The oral drops are made with MCT oil as this product, in itself not only offers a very long shelf life, it is also very beneficial to animals. Coconut oil has been found to increase energy, aid in digestion, improve skin conditions, reduce inflammation, and even help reduce allergic reactions. MCT is also tolerated by animals with diabetes and pancreatitis.

How much should I give my pet?

The general rule for a starting dosage is 0.1mg per kg of your pets weight. Here is an example for a 55 lbs dog: First convert to kilograms: 55 lbs divided by 2.2 = 25 kg Then find your starting dose: 25 kg x 0.1 mg = 2.5 mg twice a day - TO START As each animals' system is different, figuring out the exact dosage for your pet may be tricky. This is why we start low and slowly raise the dosage until the desired effects are obtained. Some animals need more, while some need less. Finding the right balance, the "sweet spot", is the key to a healthy and happy pet.

How do I administer the oral drops?

The oral drops are faster acting if you can administer directly into your pets mouth. (A must for dogs with seizures). Alternatively, you can put it on their food but make sure the entire meal is ingested. If you pet is a “grazer” we highly recommend giving the drops directly into their mouth to ensure their full dose has been given at the right time. Hint: For fussy cats, put the drops on their front paw and they will lick it off.

What time of day should I give my pet their dose?

We recommend giving your pet two doses per day. Once in the morning and once in the evening, approximately 12 hours apart.

Why does my pet have diarrhea?

Sometimes, MCT oil can be too rich for some animals causing diarrhea. Occasionally an animal can be allergic to MCT oil causing diarrhea and vomiting. If diarrhea occurs, stop the drops until the stool returns to normal, usually within a day or two. Start again and if the diarrhea reappears, stop giving the drops as an allergy may be present. We recommend contacting your vet for further assistance. You can also contact us as we can help.

What if my pet has an issue with weight gain, should I worry about MCT oil?

If you are worried about weight gain due to a specific illness, such as pancreatitis, our higher compound bottles would be a better option. A larger concentrated bottle requires less MCT oil as it contains a higher amount of hemp. This way you can give your pet more relief with less of the MCT oil. Please contact us for further assistance.

My pet seems woozy and sleepy, is this normal?

Yes! Sleepiness is the most common side-effect. This stems from the animal finally being pain free and needing to catch up on some necessary rest. Wooziness and being off balance can also occur. This, we have been told by vets, stems from the animal being pain free and not being sure why. They seem to be afraid to move in case the pain returns. As the hemp terpenes causes pain relief, the animal feels off as that lingering pain is no longer present. The sudden pain free existence is scary for them, and can make them dizzy with elation. Any other side effects should subside after a few days.

What are the ingredients in the oral drops?

The oral drops are made with MCT oil, hemp terpenes, and non-allergenic organic flavourings. That's it!

What are the ingredients in the treats?

The dog treats are baked in our factory and use human grade ingredients:

  • Oat flour
  • Chana flour
  • Rolled oats
  • Apple sauce
  • Beef broth
  • Powdered milk
  • Hemp protein powder
  • Hemp hearts
  • Eggs
  • Coconut oil
  • Hemp oil
  • The only preservatives we use is Vitamin E and Cinnamon, offering a healthy alternative.

Do I have to change the oral drop dosage when adding treats?

No you don’t! By adding treats along side the drops, the pet can remain pain/anxiety free for much longer periods.

Are the oral drops safe to take if my animal has allergies?

As long as there is not an allergy to MCT oil, you are in the clear!

Are there any interactions with other medications ie. Pharmaceuticals?

There is one ringworm medication (ketoconazole) that seems to render the medication void. Other than this, there does not seem to be any other interactions. As this medicine becomes more widespread, this could change. Of note, the ECS not only creates additional cannabinoid receptors, but it also seems to clear other pathways and some pharmaceuticals may react stronger than intended. Keeping an eye open for these side effects is important as these other medications may need their levels lowered. ALWAYS consult your vet before lower any medication!

Do I need to adjust pharmaceuticals dosage when using oral drops?

Hemp terpenes can open other pathways allowing the pharmaceuticals to work stronger. This means your pet may require less of the prescribed drugs. Always speak with your vet before altering medications.

Will my pet get high?

No! Hemp does not contain any intoxicating components, it will just help your pet feel better.

How soon will I see results?

Every animal is different so we can not answer this question directly. We have seen positive results in some pets within a few days, while others may take longer. We rely on the pet parent to monitor and adjust the dosage accordingly.

My dog only has anxiety during big events. How do I dose for that? For example: Halloween, car rides, or festivals.

If you know there is an event coming up and your pup will be anxious, start administering the oral drops 1-2 days before the event and keep administering until 1-2 days after. Although, we always recommend to continue using the drops as they are very beneficial to your animal.

I am not seeing results I hoped for, why?

The ECS is self-regulating and by feeding it, the system will work on the worst issue first. There may be an underlying issue so the results may not be noticeable at first. As that issue is repaired it will move onto the next issue. We have yet to find a pet that hasn't seen an improvement, eventually, and all it takes is a little patience. Some see a difference with one biscuit or one dose of drops, some may take longer. Dogs who have arthritis may stop limping after one dosage while others need much more to find relief. It all depends on the animal and the issues.

I overdosed my dog by accident, what do I do?

Don’t worry! It is not possible to overdose on hemp terpenes. If your animal has ingested more than intended, they may just be a bit more sleepy than usual. It will subside after a good night's sleep. Remember, this is a food and often too much of some foods makes us all sleepy.
